I asked God for a friend
Who wanted to spend time with me,
And hang out, even if all we did was nothing...
And He gave me a dog.
I asked God for someone who would just listen
And not have to try and fix all my problems,
But just sit beside me during the rough times, for comfort and cheer...
And He gave me a dog.
I asked God for a partner to play with,
Take walks, long or short,
Or act silly and run around like we're all crazy...
And He gave me a dog.
I asked God for someone to cuddle
And share hugs and kisses,
And see love in their eyes when they looked at me…
And He gave me a dog.
I asked God to protect me,
And warn me when something wasn't "right,"
To keep vigilant watch when I couldn't…
And He gave me a dog.
I asked God for eyes so I could see
And not walk into things and off curbs,
And be able to find my way in the dark...
And He gave me a dog.
I asked God for someone to love,
Who would love me, too, so much that they could hardly contain it,
Someone who would forgive quickly, overlook shortcomings, and always be ready to laugh...
And He gave me a dog.
